Excavator Bucket Teeth and Wear Parts: Match the Tooth System, Then Pick the Style

Replacement bucket teeth, adapters, tooth pins and retainers, side cutters, bucket pins, shims and hydraulic hammer chisels. Every tooth is listed by its part number and style, so you can match what is on your bucket today. Stocked in Miami, Florida and shipped nationwide.

What Wear Parts Does an Excavator Bucket Use

A bucket's cutting edge is protected by a row of adapters welded or bolted to the lip, and each adapter carries a replaceable bucket tooth held on by a tooth pin and a retainer. The tooth takes the wear so the adapter and the bucket lip don't. Side cutters protect the corners and widen the cut, and a side bar protector covers the bucket's side plates.

Where the bucket meets the machine, bucket pins and shims take up the slack that builds between the ears and the stick. JMA also stocks adapters and covers for rebuilding a worn lip, and hydraulic hammer chisels for breakers.

How to Match a Replacement Tooth

Start with the tooth system, not the bucket brand. Most teeth have a part number cast on the side; read it, or measure the adapter nose and pin hole and send us a photo. Caterpillar-style J-series teeth are numbered by size: 1U3202 is the J200 size, 1U3252 the J250, 1U3352 the J350 and 1U3452 the J450. Hensley-style X156 and ESCO-style V23 teeth only fit their own adapters, so a Cat-style tooth will not go on an ESCO-style nose.

Bucket tooth styles stocked by JMA and the work each one suits
Style Best for Example part numbers
Standard General digging and loading in mixed soil 1U3202, 1U3252
Rock chisel (RC) Rock, frost and compacted ground; long wear life 1U3202RC, 1U3452RC, 9W8452, 475-5473, 1000.3
Single tiger (TL) Hard clay and trenching; one sharp point penetrates 1U3202TL, X156TL
Twin tiger (WT / WTL) Trench corners, frozen ground and rock seams 1U3202WT, 1U3252WT, 1U3352WT, 1U3452WTL, 135-9408, X156WTL
Flare (F) Grading, loading and a clean, flat trench bottom 1U3202F, 1U3252F, X156F
Long and penetration tip Loose to medium material where fast penetration matters X156L, 9N4352, 1U3209, 9W8459
Ripper Ripper shanks on dozers and ripper attachments 4T5502, 9W2451

Cat-style part numbers are Caterpillar-style replacements; Hensley-style and ESCO-style teeth fit their own adapter systems only.

Once the system and size are known, pick the style for the ground you dig. The table shows the styles JMA stocks and the jobs they suit. Part numbers are examples from the current range; sizes that sell out are hidden until restocked, and US suppliers can get most others to us in 24–48 hours.

Replace teeth before they wear back to the adapter. A tooth worn short exposes the adapter nose, and a worn adapter means cutting it off and welding on a new one, which costs far more than a set of teeth.

Which Wear Part for Which Job

Rock, demolition and frost

Rock chisel teeth carry extra material at the tip and last longest in abrasive ground. Pair them with side cutters so the bucket corners don't wear through first.

Shop bucket teeth

Trenching and hard clay

Single tiger and twin tiger teeth concentrate the machine's force on a point, so they bite into hard clay and cut clean trench corners. They wear faster than rock chisels, so keep a spare set on the truck.

Shop bucket teeth

Grading and final cleanup

Flare teeth are wide and flat, leaving a smoother surface and a cleaner trench bottom than pointed teeth. A common swap is rock chisel for digging, flare for finishing.

Loose pins and bucket slop

Worn bucket pins and missing shims let the bucket rattle on the stick and wear the bores oval. Replace pins in pairs and shim the gap before it becomes a machining job.

Shop bucket pins

Hydraulic hammer chisels

Blunt chisels break boulders and concrete, moil points split rock and pull the hammer into the work, and pile or grooved chisels suit driving and trench work. Hammer chisels run from 53 mm to 140 mm; match the diameter to your hammer.

Why Buy Wear Parts from JMA

JM Attachments is family-owned, based in Doral with stock in Miami, Florida. Orders confirmed before 2 PM ET on a business day ship the same day. Parcel items (50 lb or less) go by FedEx or UPS, typically 5–7 business days; anything over 50 lb moves by LTL freight, typically 7–10 business days, nationwide. If the tooth, adapter or pin you need is not on the shelf, our US suppliers deliver it to us in 24–48 hours, or we drop-ship it from a supplier near your job.

JMA wear parts are OEM-style: Caterpillar-style teeth, Hensley-style teeth, ESCO-style teeth and Komatsu-style side protectors, the same patterns used on the buckets we build. Bucket Teeth and Wear Parts FAQ

Short answers on tooth types, sizes, replacement, adapters, warranty, returns and shipping.

The main styles are standard (general digging), rock chisel (rock and frost, longest wear), single tiger (one sharp point for hard clay and trenching), twin tiger (two points for trench corners and frozen ground), flare (wide and flat for grading and loading), long and penetration tip (loose material), and ripper teeth for ripper shanks. They come in tooth systems such as Caterpillar-style J-series, Hensley-style X156 and ESCO-style V23.

Read the part number cast on the side of the tooth or adapter. On Caterpillar-style J-series teeth the number gives the size: 1U3202 is J200, 1U3252 is J250, 1U3352 is J350 and 1U3452 is J450. If the number is worn off, measure the adapter nose and the pin hole and send us a photo; we match it before you order.

They are different locking systems. Each tooth only fits adapters of its own system, because the nose shape and pin arrangement differ. A Cat-style tooth will not fit an ESCO-style adapter. Match the system first, then choose the style.

Rock chisel teeth have a broad, heavy tip that resists wear in rock, frost and compacted ground. Tiger teeth have one (single tiger) or two (twin tiger) sharp points that penetrate harder material and cut corners, but they wear faster. Use tiger teeth to break in, rock chisels for long life.

Before the tooth wears back to the adapter. Once the adapter nose is exposed it wears quickly, and replacing an adapter means cutting it off and welding on a new one. Rounded, shortened or cracked teeth also make the machine work harder and burn more fuel.

Drive out the tooth pin with a pin punch, pull the old tooth off the adapter, clean the adapter nose, slide the new tooth on, fit a new retainer and drive the pin back through until it seats. Replace the pin and retainer each time; they are inexpensive and a worn retainer can let a tooth fall off.

Yes. JMA stocks Cat-style and ESCO-style adapters and covers, tooth pins, retainers, side cutters, a side bar protector, bucket shims and bucket pins. If a part is not in stock, US suppliers get it to us in 24–48 hours or we drop-ship it from a supplier near you.

No. Wear parts such as teeth, adapters, cutting edges, pins and bushings wear by design and carry no warranty. The attachment warranty (lifetime on structural welds, two years / 2,000 hours on manufacturing defects) covers the bucket itself.

No. Teeth, pins and similar consumables cannot be returned. Send us the part number or a photo before you order and we confirm the match.
