Buyer's Guide

Backhoe Loader Attachments: Match the Two Pins, Then Pick the Tool

Trenching, digging and ditching buckets, brush rakes, ripper teeth, hydraulic hammers, thumbs and quick couplers for the backhoe end of your loader. Every pin-on tool is listed by its main pin and link pin size, so you can confirm fitment before you order. Stocked in Miami, Florida and shipped nationwide.

What Attachments Fit a Backhoe Loader

The backhoe end of a loader backhoe takes the same family of pin-on tools as a small excavator, and JMA carries a dedicated backhoe line for it. The backhoe loader buckets range covers trenching buckets in 6", 8" and 12", digging buckets in 18", 24", 30" and 36", a 48" ditching bucket and an 18" heavy duty digging bucket, plus a 48" brush rake, ripper teeth, an 800 joule hydraulic hammer, main pin hydraulic thumbs and manual quick couplers.

What sets backhoe products apart in the catalog is the pin callout. A backhoe dipper and its link plates usually run two different pin diameters, so each tool is named with both, main pin first and link pin second: 45mm/38mm, 50mm/45mm or 55mm/50mm. A few tools shared with mini excavators carry a single pin size instead. Stock by pin pair changes through the year; if the pair you need is not showing, send us the two sizes and we quote availability.

How to Choose by Pin Size, Weight Class and Tool

Start with the pins, not the brand. Measure the main pin at the end of the dipper and the link pin through the bucket links, then find the product that lists that pair in the same order. A 50mm/45mm bucket will not go on a 45mm/38mm stick without re-bushing, and a loose bucket wears its bores oval. We size every attachment from the manufacturer's factory pin dimensions for your model; if the machine has a quick coupler or has been modified, measure the pin diameter, pin-to-pin distance and ear width before ordering and we check them against the attachment. Pairs we do not list can be re-bushed in Miami.

Buckets are listed by pin pair only. The brush rake, ripper tooth and heavy duty bucket also carry a weight class, 6.5-9 ton backhoes, and the two hydraulic thumbs are split by class: 45mm main pin for 5-6.5 ton machines, 50mm main pin for 6.5-9 ton. Check operating weight before choosing a thumb, because the thumb is sized to the dipper, not to the bucket.

Main pin first, link pin second. Single-pin tools list one diameter that must match your main pin.

Once the pins are settled, pick the tool by the work. The job cards below match each attachment to a task. Widths are bucket cutting widths. Single-pin tools list one diameter; confirm it against your main pin.

Which Attachment for Which Job

Utility trenches and drain lines

A trenching bucket in 6", 8" or 12" cuts a narrow, clean trench for conduit, irrigation and drain lines without moving extra spoil. Each width is made for every backhoe pin pair; pick the width that matches the pipe and bedding.

Shop trenching buckets

Footings and general excavation

The digging bucket is the everyday tool, in 18", 24", 30" and 36". Use 18" or 24" for footings and tight spots where breakout force per inch matters, and 30" or 36" for open excavation in normal soil where you want to move material faster.

Shop digging buckets

Grading, backfill and cleanup

A 48" ditching bucket is the right tool for shaping swales, cleaning trench bottoms and pulling backfill level. Keep it out of hard or rocky ground and use it for finishing.

Shop ditching buckets

Hard ground, roots and compacted fill

When a standard bucket stalls, run the 18" heavy duty digging bucket (45mm pins) or loosen the ground first with a ripper tooth, which breaks up hardpan, clay and root mats so the bucket can follow. The backhoe ripper comes in all three pin pairs; a 50mm single-pin ripper for 7-10 ton excavators also fits a 50mm main pin.

Shop ripper teeth

Land clearing and brush piles

The 48" brush rake for 6.5-9 ton backhoes pulls brush, roots and debris out of the soil and lets the dirt fall through the tines, so you move less weight to the pile.

Concrete, asphalt and rock

The 800 joule hydraulic hammer for backhoe loaders is made in all three pin pairs. JMA also lists a 1,000 J hammer (7-10 ton, 50mm pins) shared with mini excavators and 350 J and 500 J post driver hammers for lighter carriers. Make sure the stick has a hammer circuit before you order.

Shop hammers

Grabbing pipe, logs and debris

A main pin hydraulic thumb turns the bucket into a clamp for pipe, timber and demolition debris. JMA makes a 45mm thumb for 5-6.5 ton machines and a 50mm thumb for 6.5-9 ton machines; choose by your main pin and operating weight, and plan for an auxiliary circuit on the stick. Thumbs are built in small runs, so ask us for current availability.

Changing tools several times a day

If one machine trenches in the morning and grades in the afternoon, a manual quick coupler saves the pin-knocking. The standard coupler has 45mm pins and the spring coupler 55mm pins, so confirm your main pin first.

Why Buy Backhoe Loader Attachments from JMA

JM Attachments is family-owned, based in Doral with stock in Miami, Florida. Orders are placed online; orders confirmed before 2 PM ET on a business day ship the same day. Parcel items (50 lb or less) go by FedEx or UPS, typically 5–7 business days; anything over 50 lb moves by LTL freight, typically 7–10 business days, nationwide. The same pin-on tools run on backhoes from Caterpillar, John Deere, Case, JCB, Kubota and Volvo, among others, when sized to the machine's factory pin dimensions.

Every attachment carries a lifetime warranty on structural welds and a two-year / 2,000-hour warranty against manufacturing defects (year one parts and pre-approved labor, year two parts). Hydraulic components are covered for one year / 1,000 hours. Wear parts such as teeth, adapters, cutting edges, pins and bushings are not covered. Buckets use Caterpillar-style, Hensley-style and ESCO-style tooth systems; replacement teeth, adapters and pins are in the bucket wear parts range.

Fitment problems are solved in-house in Miami: pins re-bushed, pin-on heads converted to quick coupler heads, and tooth styles swapped, such as 1U3202RC to 1U3202F. Custom attachments run on a 10% deposit, drawing approval and roughly 60 to 90 days, with the production lead time confirmed in writing before the order is finalized.

Backhoe Loader Attachment FAQ

Short answers on pin sizes, buckets, hammers, thumbs, couplers, warranty, returns and shipping.

The first number is the main pin, which passes through the end of the dipper stick, and the second is the link pin, which passes through the bucket links. JMA backhoe buckets, rakes, rippers and 800 J hammers are made in three pairs: 45mm/38mm, 50mm/45mm and 55mm/50mm. Measure both pins and match both numbers in the same order.

Pull one bucket pin and measure its diameter with calipers, then do the same for the link pin, because on a backhoe they are usually different. Also measure the pin-to-pin distance and the inside width between the ears. If you cannot pull a pin, measure the bore in the bucket ears and link plates. If the bores are worn oval, contact us before you order.

JMA backhoe digging buckets come in 18", 24", 30" and 36". Use 18" or 24" for footings, hard ground and tight excavation, and 30" or 36" for open digging in normal soil. For trenches narrower than 18", use a 6", 8" or 12" trenching bucket; for grading and cleanup, the 48" ditching bucket.

The 800 joule hydraulic hammer for backhoe loaders is the direct fit, made in all three backhoe pin pairs. JMA also lists a 1,000 J hammer (7-10 ton, 50mm pins) shared with mini excavators. Make sure your auxiliary hydraulic circuit is set up for a hammer before you order.

Yes. JMA makes two main pin hydraulic thumbs that list backhoe loaders in the fitment: a 45mm thumb for 5-6.5 ton machines and a 50mm thumb for 6.5-9 ton machines. The thumb mounts on the main pin of the dipper, so match the main pin diameter and operating weight, and plan for a hydraulic circuit on the stick. Ask us for current availability.

JMA sizes every attachment from the manufacturer's factory pin dimensions for your model, for Caterpillar, John Deere, Case, JCB, Kubota, Volvo and others. Tell us the model and we confirm the fit before you buy. If the machine has a quick coupler or has been modified, measure the pin diameter, pin-to-pin distance and ear width first; returns for fit issues on unverified machines carry a 25% restocking fee.

Stock by pin pair changes through the year and out-of-stock sizes are hidden from the catalog. Send us the two pin sizes and the tool you need and we quote availability. JMA can also re-bush an in-stock attachment to your pins in Miami.

A lifetime warranty on structural welds and a two-year / 2,000-hour warranty against manufacturing defects: year one covers parts and pre-approved labor, year two covers parts. Hydraulic components (cylinders, motors, control valves) are covered for one year / 1,000 hours; hoses and fittings for 90 days. Wear parts such as teeth, adapters, cutting edges, pins and bushings are not covered. Written authorization from JMA is required before any repair.

Yes. JMA hydraulic hammers carry a 24-month component warranty; coverage varies by component (front head, back head, cylinder and piston up to 24 months on the 20–140 class; housing and hydraulic parts 12 months; seals, bolts and bushings shorter). Chisels are wear items. The warranty card that ships with the hammer lists every period.

Orders confirmed before 2 PM ET on a business day ship the same day from Miami, Florida. Parcel items (50 lb or less) go by FedEx or UPS, usually 5–7 business days; heavier attachments go by LTL freight, usually 7–10 business days, with a delivery appointment and signature. Liftgate service is available on request. Check the attachment for damage and note it on the delivery receipt before signing.

Unused, uninstalled attachments in the original packaging can be returned within 14 calendar days of delivery with a Return Authorization Number from JMA. The buyer pays return shipping, and a 25% restocking fee applies to non-defective returns, including wrong machine specs and unverified compatibility. Defective items, JMA shipping errors and carrier damage noted on the delivery receipt are replaced or refunded with no fee. Custom, installed, used or modified products and consumables such as teeth and pins cannot be returned.

Yes. Custom orders start with a 10% deposit, then approval of the drawing and specs, then roughly 60 to 90 days of production; the lead time is confirmed in writing before the order is finalized. Custom orders can be cancelled within 24 hours of confirmation and before production starts, with a 25% cancellation fee; after that they are non-cancellable.
